Letter
to the Editor:
Voting,
the Ultimate
demonstration. Pertaining
to the 2-part editorials
in the UR-Independent
February 25, 2003 issue.
The second portion
alludes to the
correctness of
"Respectful
differences", the
right of assembly, free
speech, etc. all very
well. Eagle Points flag
display on holidays is a
joy to behold.
But
this thoughtful opinion
did follow " weigh
the odds " where the
voting privilege and
voting rights of citizens
is questioned. Citizens
were chastised for a
legal petition to allow
citizens the opportunity
to vote on their very own
and Shady Cove's future.
Troubling issues for many
are the implications of
this bond measure money
being spent on a 2.8 acre
site. Presently adequate
for today's population
but with projected growth
as the Water District
comes on line will need
to be abandoned in less
that 10 years when Shady
Cove' s population
exceeds 4500. That new
site, new technology (no
chorine), must now be
found to proceed with
development. Any borrowed
money, 40-year loan on a
less than a 10-year
serviceable project is
not what citizens of
Shady Cove want nor need.
Let's
continue repairing
manhole I&I, let us
minimize extra sewer
ground water intake
during those
extraordinarily wet
times, like the last one
of Dec.1997. Let's look
towards the future and
what growth this Upper
Rogue area can sustain.
Proper
planning would eliminate
$2000 election costs as
issues can be inserted in
general elections for
little cost. Special
elections are the
problem.
Thank
you,
Vic

Editor's
note: The engineer's
report says the facility
is designed for 20 year
growth at four percent
per year.
Vic's
note: Do the math and
check back here in less
than 10 years when the
new sewer plant is
proposed.
