Q.
IF THERE IS A PIVATE WATER DISTRICT IN OUR
MIDST, HOW WOULD THEY GET CONTROL OF OUR FIRE
DISTRICT, OR COULD THEY? AFRED RICHARDSON
A. Control comes
with the majority of the 5000 FD4 voters.
Today 4 district 4 is just plain short of
manpower. For safety, you must have 2 people
on site. If they did run out of water, who's
to go fill up again. They are relying on
mutual aid from fire District 3, if they are
available. This is the whole district today.
People realizing that fact should vote to fix
the problem for the good of the rural as well
as the city portion of FD4. If Shady Cove and
it's 2400 and growing poulation fixes the
problem with fire hydrants, water or manpower
would seem to be OK so there will be no
incentive to increase manpower for the safety
of the rural area of the district. By this
time Shady Cove may well have a majority of
the voters. Vic
Q. In
the May 8th 2001 issue of the Independent it
stated that by 2004 our monthly sewer rates
would be $36.50. Could this be true?
A. I can
believe it because in 1993 sewer rates were
$14.50 and now they are $26.50 per month soon
to be $36.50. If you follow this trend we can
expect to see a water bill of well over $80 a
month in a few short years. Quien Sabe
Q. Is
it true that the Alternative water committee
is moving toward a proposal that will develop
mountains springs as a source of water
sufficient for Shady Cove now and well into
the future?
A. Yes the area
was visited and topographical maps show that
a watershed greater than 3000 acres exists
above the 2400 ft elevation of the springs,
much of which is National Forest. This much
natural watershed could easily support future
Shady Cove water needs as well as parts of
Trail and Sam's Valley. Quien Sabe
Q. Is
the generation of power also possible that
could itself pay for the project?
A. Yes, with an
elevation drop of 1000 feet there is a very
large power generation potential. As far as
the value of power, we can all relate to the
ever increasing electric bills. Quien Sabe
Q. Is it
true that no one recalls seeing the Rogue
River at such a low level of water flow over
the winter and spring months?
A. Yes, these
winter/spring flows have been artificially
low as water is being retained behind Lost
Creek Dam. These flows now will have to be
increased as the temperature rises so that
the fish have a chance of survival. Hopefully
the Lost Creek pool is sufficient to maintain
adequate summer flows. Quien Sabe
