The memorial service for W. Earl Calhoun will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trail Community Church. Pastor Ron Welch will officiate.

Mr. Calhoun, 86, of Shady Cove, died Thursday (Feb. 20, 2003)- at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Rogue Community Center, 22465 Highway 62, Shady Cove, OR 97539.

He was born March 27, 1916, in LaFayette, Ind., to James "Arthur" Calhoun and Helen "Merle" Gaither. He graduated from Otterbein High School. On June 17, 1939, in Los Angeles, he married Johanne "Joan" Christensen, who survives.

Mr. Calhoun was a retired construction electrician and a member of I.B.E.W. for 60 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from Fullerton, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1934 to 1938, aboard the USS Tuscaloosa.

Mr. Calhoun was a community activist and was very active in- - the community. He was a member of the Democratic Central Committee, Upper Rogue Community Center, Shady Cove- Booster Club, Southern California Paleontological Society, and was an associate of the Museum of Natural History

in Los Angeles.

He enjoyed fossil and mushroom hunting, fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Bob, Shady Cove, and William E. Jr., Treasure Island, Florida; a daughter; Nancy Calhoun, Berkeley, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard "Dick," and John Neils; and a sister, Helen Bradford.
